Speaker: Phil Deloria, author of 'Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Abstract.' In 'Becoming Mary Sully,' Philip J. Deloria reclaims this artist's work from obscurity, exploring her stunning portfolio through the lenses of modernism, industrial design, Dakota women's aesthetics, mental health, ethnography and anthropology, primitivism, and the American Indian politics of the 1930s. The main body of her work is what she called “personality prints” based on famous musicians, actors, and celebrities she read about in publications like Ladies’ Home Journal and Time magazine.
